Chapter

Thirty-Five

Volten

Islid my gaze across the group of humans assembled in the rarely used sparring ring. Steel fencing encircled us, rising high and then curving to create a dome overhead. There was no escape except through the single iron mesh door that was currently bolted shut from the outside. There was no hiding from the sound echoing off the rigid surfaces. There was no avoiding the scent of sweat and blood that stained the floor and permeated the warm air. It was the ideal setting to teach the cadets what it would be like to be trapped in the maze.

At my suggestion, Fiona and Ariana had widened their after-hours sessions to include the human males, although the men looked equally nervous to be in the training area that had been all but abandoned after the introduction of holochambers. They also appeared less sure they should be there at all as if attending extra coaching was admitting to weakness they didn’t possess. As a Drexian, I understood them more than I wished to admit.

Part of me was glad I’d agreed to help Ariana train the humans, but another part of me was certain I was signing my own termination papers. I’d never done anything as reckless before, but I’d also never had as good a reason to break the rules, if we were breaking rules. There was nothing in any regulations that prevented giving cadets extra help, although I doubted that the academy’s new security chief would agree with that assessment.

Not that I cared what Vyk thought, especially since he was the one who was making it harder for all cadets to survive. Helping the humans train for the trials was only evening the playing field, something that was never done for me when I was thrown into the academy. I didn’t view my actions as breaking the rules as much as making them fair for everyone.

“Lieutenant?”

I snapped my head to Ariana as she stood to one side with an expectant look on her face. I cleared my throat and held up a sparring blade. “The Drexian blade is something that you will be allowed in the maze. It is also the weapon that every Drexian cadet will have been practicing with since they were children.”

I ran my hand across the dulled edge of the practice version of the curved blade that every Drexian carried. I hadn’t come from a military family, but even I’d possessed a small, curved blade as a boy. Fighting with it was something the humans would need to learn if they were going to make it through the trials to enter one of the schools.

“Are these the weapons we’ll be using during the trials?”

I sought out the female cadet who’d asked the question—a blonde with her long hair pulled up high. “These blades will not cut you. The blades you will have for the trials will be real and will slice you to pieces.”

Eyes widened and mouths gaped, but I ignored their shock. I was getting the sense that testing at human schools did not involve the possibility of death.
